First Aid for Animal Bites
Immediate first aid steps to take after an animal bite. Remember: Always seek professional medical care after administering first aid.
Clean the Wound
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Rinse the wound with clean running water for 5-10 minutes
- Use mild soap to clean around the wound
Tip: Use bottled water if clean running water is not available
Stop the Bleeding
- Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage
- Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible
- Don't use a tourniquet unless bleeding is severe
Warning: Avoid direct pressure on deep puncture wounds
Apply Antiseptic
- Apply antibiotic ointment or cream
- Use povidone-iodine solution if available
- Avoid hydrogen peroxide or alcohol directly on wound
Tip: Pat dry gently with sterile gauze before applying antiseptic
Cover & Seek Help
- Cover with sterile bandage or clean cloth
- Seek medical attention within 24 hours
- Bring vaccination records if available
Urgent: Seek immediate help for bites on face, neck, or hands
Important Reminders

- Identify the animal if possible (take photos safely)
- Note the time and location of the bite
- Watch for signs of infection (redness, swelling, fever)
Don'ts:
- Don't try to capture the animal yourself
- Don't apply stitches to bite wounds
- Don't ignore bites from vaccinated pets
